Trailer Financing for New Authority

Trailers can be financed just like trucks, but there is one rule that catches new authority owners off guard: the per-piece minimum. Understand it before you shop and you will save yourself a dead-end application.

The per-piece minimum

Each single piece of equipment has to be worth at least $15,000 to finance through the program. A trailer is its own piece. So a $9,000 or $12,000 trailer falls below the line and cannot be financed on its own.

You cannot bundle trailers to hit the minimum

This is the part people try to get around. The minimum is per piece, not per deal. You cannot combine two $8,000 trailers into one $16,000 loan to clear the floor. Each trailer has to stand on its own at $15,000 or more. The same goes for a truck plus a trailer. Each one is evaluated separately.

What that means for new authority

If your authority is young, the usual new authority rules still apply on top of the minimum: expect a larger down payment, often 20% or more, and a higher rate until you build history. A trailer that clears the minimum and fits your work is the goal.

What lenders want to see

  • A trailer priced at $15,000 or more as a single unit.
  • A down payment ready, larger for new authority.
  • Business bank statements with steady deposits.
  • Your authority and insurance in order.

What to do with a cheaper trailer

  • Pay cash if the trailer is affordable. Small equipment is a good cash buy.
  • Step up to a trailer that meets the minimum and still fits your budget and freight.
  • Finance the piece that qualifies and buy the smaller one outright.

Match the trailer to your freight

A dry van, reefer, flatbed, and step deck each serve different loads. Buy the trailer that fits the freight you can actually book. The right trailer stays busy and pays for itself. The wrong one sits.
