Hotshot Truck Financing

Hotshot is one of the cheapest ways to get into trucking. Instead of a $150,000 semi, you run a heavy-duty pickup and a gooseneck trailer. Lower entry cost, faster start, and steady demand for smaller and urgent loads. Here is how the financing works.

What a hotshot setup is

A typical hotshot rig is a one-ton dually pickup, think a 350 or 3500, paired with a 40-foot gooseneck or flatbed trailer. You haul loads that are too small or too urgent for a full semi. Many new owners start here because the total cost is a fraction of a big rig.

The two-piece financing rule

This is the most important thing to understand. Your truck and your trailer are two separate pieces of equipment. Each one must meet the $15,000 minimum on its own to be financed. You cannot bundle a $12,000 truck and a $10,000 trailer into one $22,000 loan.

In practice, a qualifying dually pickup is usually well over $15,000, so the truck is fine. The trailer is where people get stuck. A cheaper trailer under the minimum has to be paid for in cash or bought as a higher-priced unit that clears the floor.

New authority and hotshot

The usual new authority rules apply. Expect a down payment of 20% or more and a higher rate until you build history. The upside is that the dollar amounts are smaller than on a semi, so 20% down is easier to save.

What you need to get approved

  • A truck and trailer that each meet the $15,000 minimum.
  • A down payment ready, larger for new authority.
  • Business bank statements with steady deposits.
  • Your CDL if the combined weight requires it, plus insurance.

Know the weight and CDL rules

Depending on your truck and trailer combined weight, you may need a CDL. Check your gross combination weight rating before you buy so you are not surprised. It does not change the financing, but it changes who can legally run the rig.

Why hotshot is a smart start

Lower cost means lower risk. You build authority, credit, and a track record on a cheaper rig, then step up to a semi later with much better terms. Plenty of successful owner-operators started with a hotshot setup.
